In a quest to understand the growing interest in mushroom supplements, we reached out to a diverse group of women from various age groups and backgrounds to ask them a simple question: What do you think about mushroom supplements, and what concerns or fears do you have about them? The results were both insightful and revealing, shedding light on the evolving perspectives around this trending wellness product.
A Snapshot of the Numbers
Out of the 1,000 women we surveyed:
- 72% had heard about mushroom supplements, but only 39% had actually tried them.
- Among those who had tried them, 65% expressed positive experiences, particularly noting improvements in mental clarity and energy levels.
- However, nearly 45% of respondents admitted they were skeptical or hesitant to try mushroom supplements, citing a range of concerns.

Common Fears and Concerns
The top reasons women hesitated to try mushroom supplements included:
Safety Concerns (33%): A significant portion worried about potential side effects or long-term health risks.
Myth 1. Mushroom Supplements Cure Diseases
- Myth: Some believe that mushroom supplements can outright cure serious illnesses like cancer, diabetes, or heart disease.
- Fact: While certain mushrooms (like reishi, shiitake, and lion's mane) have bioactive compounds that may support health, they are not a cure for diseases. Research suggests they can complement treatments or support overall well-being, but they should not replace medical care.

Known for her holistic approach to health, actress and Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow is a big fan of Reishi mushrooms.
Lack of Regulation (28%): Many were concerned about the unregulated nature of the supplement industry, with fears that not all products are tested for purity and potency.
Myth 2. Mushroom Supplements Are a New Trend
- Myth: Mushroom supplements are a recent health trend.
- Fact: Medicinal mushrooms have been used for thousands of years, particularly in traditional Chinese medicine and other ancient health systems. The current trend is simply a revival of ancient practices backed by modern research.
Myth 3. Global Movements doesn't Toward Legalization
In some regions, governments have already begun to recognize the need for regulating natural supplements, including mushrooms. For instance:
- Canada requires that all natural health products, including mushroom supplements, be licensed before being sold, with evidence supporting safety, efficacy, and quality.
- The European Union also has a framework in place that regulates the sale of dietary supplements, ensuring that manufacturers meet strict safety and labeling requirements.
As these global movements continue to expand, other countries, including the U.S., are expected to follow suit. The growing body of evidence supporting the health benefits of mushrooms, combined with consumer demand for greater transparency and safety, makes legalization an important step forward.
Allergic Reactions (19%): Some women expressed concern about possible allergic reactions, especially if they were unfamiliar with certain mushroom species.
Myth 4. Mushroom Supplements Have No Side Effects
- Myth: Since mushrooms are natural, they are entirely safe and have no side effects.
- Fact: While mushrooms are generally safe for most people, they can interact with medications or cause allergic reactions in some individuals. Some mushrooms, like reishi, may also cause mild side effects such as dry mouth or upset stomach in high doses.
Ineffectiveness (17%): A portion of the group believed that the claimed health benefits might be overstated or unsupported by sufficient scientific research.
Myth 5. All Mushroom Supplements Are the Same
- Myth: All mushroom supplements offer the same benefits, regardless of the species or how they're processed.
- Fact: Different mushroom species offer different health benefits. For example, lion's mane may support cognitive health, while cordyceps is associated with increased energy and endurance. Additionally, the extraction process can greatly affect the potency and bioavailability of the supplement.

Podcast host and comedian Joe Rogan has been vocal about his use of Lion's Mane to enhance cognitive function and sharpen focus.
Myth 6. Whole Mushroom Is Better Than Extract
- Myth: Consuming whole mushrooms in supplements is always more beneficial than extracts.
- Fact: Many medicinal mushrooms contain bioactive compounds, like beta-glucans, that are more concentrated and effective when extracted. Some whole mushroom supplements may not deliver these compounds in high enough concentrations to be effective.
Myth 7. Mushroom Supplements Give Instant Results
- Myth: Taking mushroom supplements will provide immediate benefits.
- Fact: Like many natural supplements, the effects of medicinal mushrooms may take time to become noticeable. Consistent use over weeks or months is often necessary to see the potential health benefits.

Music sensation Miley Cyrus has always been energetic on stage, and she attributes some of that energy to Cordyceps mushrooms.
Myth 8. Only Exotic Mushrooms Are Effective
- Myth: Only rare or exotic mushrooms, like cordyceps or lion’s mane, are beneficial for health.
- Fact: Common mushrooms, such as shiitake or maitake, also have powerful health properties. Exotic mushrooms may have unique benefits, but more common varieties can be just as effective for certain health goals.
Myth 9. Mushrooms Provide All the Nutrients You Need
- Myth: Mushroom supplements can replace a balanced diet or provide all necessary nutrients.
- Fact: While mushrooms are nutrient-rich and contain bioactive compounds, they cannot replace a balanced diet. They should be seen as a supplement to a healthy lifestyle, not a substitute for proper nutrition.
